Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was brought into the world on 15 Walk 1977 in Kozhikode, Kerala. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan came from a Nair family living in Bangalore, where they had moved from Cheruvannur, in Kozhikode Locale of Kerala. He was the main child of resigned ISRO official K. Unnikrishnan and Dhanalakshmi Unnikrishnan. Major Unnikrishnan burned through 14 years at the Straightforward Anthony State funded School in Bangalore prior to graduating in 1995 in the Science stream. He needed to enlist in the Military, right from his school days and did well in school exercises and games. He was likewise an individual from the school ensemble and delighted in watching motion pictures.


Major Unnikrishnan enlisted in the Public Safeguard Foundation (NDA), Pune, Maharashtra in 1995 and was an alum of the 94th Course of NDA. His NDA companions recollect him as "magnanimous", "liberal" and "cool as a cucumber". He was charged as a lieutenant to the seventh Brigade of the Bihar Regiment (Infantry) on 12 July 1999. Subsequent to serving the Indian Armed force in various areas in Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan during counter revolts for two terms, he was chosen to enlist in the Public safety Gatekeepers. On culmination of preparing, he was doled out to the Extraordinary Activity Gathering (Hang) of NSG in January 2007 and partook in different tasks of the NSG. During the 'Ghatak course' (at the Commando Wing (Infantry School), Belgaum), the most troublesome course of the Military, Unnikrishnan beat the course, acquiring an "Educator Reviewing" and tribute. He picked the NSG commando administration which he joined on assignment in 2006.

The evening of 26 November 2008, a few famous structures in South Mumbai were gone after. One of the structures where prisoners were held was the 100-year-old Taj Mahal Castle Inn. Major Unnikrishnan was the group commandant of 51 Extraordinary Activity Gathering (51 Hang) sent in the activity at the lodging to safeguard the prisoners. He entered the lodging with a gathering of 10 commandos and arrived at the 6th floor through the flight of stairs. As the group slipped the steps, they thought culprits on the third floor. A couple of ladies were kept as prisoners in a room which was locked from within.


The group chose to tear open the entryway and when it was done the group confronted blast of fire from the fear mongers. The rounds of fire by the culprits hit Commando Sunil Yadav, who was Major Unnikrishnan's associate. Major Unnikrishnan drew in the culprits in a firefight and set up for Yadav's departure. Later Major Unnikrishnan gave a pursuit to the psychological militants who had disappeared to one more floor of the inn. In the experience that followed, he was shot from the back which demonstrated deadly. His final words, as per NSG authorities were, "Don't come up, I will deal with them" . His outstanding boldness and administration propelled his companions to effectively take out every one of the psychological militants and complete the relegated mission.


Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was given the country's most elevated peacetime chivalry grant "Ashok Chakra" for his remarkable boldness, unwavering battling soul and preeminent penance.
